Mars Pa More Drama - A Story Within a Story by Ramon Lacalle
This recent story about the Mars Pa family in Tondo, Philippines has generated a lot of discussion. Mars Pa, known for his controversial performances in films such as Papayo and Apologize, first gained notice when President Benigno Aquino Jr. selected him to play a lead role in a government project in Manila. The story was that a former student of the late revolutionary icon, Fidel Castro, who is now dead, wanted Castro's son, Fidel Jr., to succeed him as President of the Philippines. Castro, worried about plots against his life and worried about his own son's deteriorating health, requested the help of a mysterious friend to get Castro rid of a rival immediately.
Castro, concerned that his daughter would be sidelined, asked the friend to help him get rid of Mars Pa. So the two decided to have a showdown. It turned out well.
In this latest drama, Mars Pa turns in the role of savior for Fidel Castro. Fidel's daughter Rosie is suspected of involvement in the attempted assassination of her father. The two became bitter enemies and there is a long and dramatic struggle over the direction of the government and leadership. Fidel throws a rousing speech against the "tyrant" that tries to arrest his daughter's leadership, followed by a well-planned Coup de grace. Fidel then orders his troops to attack the rebel stronghold of Alodia.
What a gripping, intense scene! I was riveted by every second of it. I particularly enjoyed watching Mars Pa in his role as a leader risking everything in order to save the rebels. I especially liked the way his character negotiates with the military leaders to ensure victory.
This is the third release of a five-part series chronicling the life of Fidel and his family. My favorite scenes from the first two installments are present in this story. The entire book is filled with humor and a sense of human drama. There are conflicts, but they are always presented in a very positive light. Throughout the story, we learn more about Fidel, his wife Celine, and their daughter Rosie. I really enjoyed reading the part in which Fidel finally learns the truth about his family and comes to terms with his own legacy.
My final thought for this Mars Pa More Drama Pinoy series is that this is an enjoyable story. There is romance throughout, but at the same time, the story is real and has strong characters. I recommend this for readers who have an avid interest in reading western-oriented books about the Filipino struggle for independence. The storyline is engaging and appealing. The characters are well-developed. The story has many appealing characteristics, especially for those who enjoy a more action-filled story within a story about a girl who is pregnant and must choose between her love and her unborn baby.
